Since elephants aren't known for being light on their feet, you can bet Tembo the Badass Elephant is a loud, explosive game. Along the way there are 10 civilians to rescue and hundreds of enemies to defeat, and doing so will earn medals, achievements, and even unlock the levels ahead.

Despite the similarities between the movements of Tembo and Rambi, the pacing is not far from what you'd expect in the modern Donkey Kong Country series, as you're usually free to explore at your leisure or use Tembo's power and speed to quickly plow through a stage. There are four worlds, each comprised of four standard A to B levels (except for the final world, which is two levels shorter) and one boss battle – it's not a particularly long game, with a thorough playthrough clocking in around six hours. This is a fairly traditional platformer when it comes to structure. Controlling an awful lot like Rambi the rhino from Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze, Tembo charges through the landscape at the press of a button, bashing through obstructions and enemies while devouring peanuts along the way. Tembo is the Rambo of the animal kingdom – he's a pachyderm military force to be reckoned with. When the evil Phantom Commander and his loyal army take over Shell City, the military calls on the aid of Tembo the elephant, drawing him out of retirement. Enemies often uses projectiles that need to be dodged and Tembo always needs to get close to attack.Tembo the Badass Elephant is a 2.5D side-scrolling action game with a hand-drawn comic book art style that somewhat resembles Regular Show and other Cartoon Network cartoons. That way, to complete levels and unlock new ones as well as bosses, there are sometimes specific requirements to fulfill. The remaining civilians to be rescued are shown as green icons in the top right corner and the game also keeps tracks of the remaining enemies. These fill up a jar and when 300 are collected Tembo's health can be replenished. In each level a number of peanuts can be collected.
Tembo can jump into cannons and launch himself into the air, curling up into a ball, to travel a large distance. Many levels can be completed by chaining moves together without losing momentum. There are some environment and physics based puzzles with switches and barriers, but mainly the game is very fast and focuses on destruction. The game uses a comic book-like visual style and certain sounds are spelled out as words.
The pace and moveset is often reminiscent of the early Sonic games. When attacking or breaking through objects the trunk temporarily transforms into a hammer. He can only carry a limited amount of water, shown as a separate meter below the health bar. Using his trunk he can collect water to put out fires. Tembo can also perform a dive spin in the air, launching himself towards the ground in a diagonal direction. When the path is blocked below he can perform a butt stomp to break through it or use it as an attack against enemies. Dash is used to attack with his tusks, break through objects and walls to create a path and through crates to collect coins and apples that restore health. Tembo is dressed as Rambo and he is able to jump, float in the air, slide through narrow passages and dash (optionally combined with a jump or a running attack). The game consists of seventeen levels with sub and main bosses.
Along the way civilians can be rescued as well and they travel on his back during the level. To defeat the invasion three phantom domes, large tanks, need to be destroyed. He calls Tembo who uses a flock of birds to fly to the city and help against the attack.
